Squint in Eyes, Pediatrics eye care

What is squint?

Squint is a condition of misalignment of eyes with respect to one another.

The 2 eyes fail to coordinate with each other, with one eye focusing in one direction and the other eye in another. Hence the brain suppresses one of the eyes to avoid double vision or overlapping vision.

Simply put, it’s not only a cosmetic deformity but is blindness in an eye (when using both eyes together) despite having a good vision potential. Along with this, there is loss of 3d vision and visual field deformity.

Causes of Squint:

  • Congenital- by birth
  • Refractive error
  • Paralysis
  • Trauma

Squint treatment:

One or a combination of the below-mentioned treatment options can correct squint

  • Spectacles
  • Eye exercises (as advised by an ophthalmologist- different squints require different types of eye exercises)
  • Botulinum toxin injection
  • Surgery

Surgery is done only if necessary. It can realign the eyes and re-establish 3D vision. Squint correction not only makes a person look better, but it also enables them to see better.

The cost of squint surgery ranges from Rs.10,000 to Rs.35,000.
